In a story from the Gospel of Mark, the tale of Bartimaeus is narrated, a blind beggar sitting by the roadside as he leaves Jericho, asking for help from the passersby. At that moment, Jesus was passing through accompanied by his disciples and a crowd.
In response to Bartimaeus' request, the crowd tries to silence him, but Jesus calls him to himself. The blind man approaches, and in a simple dialogue, Jesus asks what he desires. Bartimaeus, in faith, asks to recover his sight. Jesus acknowledges that faith and restores his vision, not only physical but also internal, the faith in God.
Despite the objections of some present, Bartimaeus persists in calling out to Jesus, recognizing him as the Son of David and asking for compassion. This perseverant and faith-filled attitude allows him to receive the miracle of sight and follow Jesus on his path.
The story of Bartimaeus invites us to reflect on the importance of faith and perseverance in seeking divine help. Sometimes, like those accompanying Jesus, we can be selfish or blind to the needs of others, but recognizing that lack of faith and seeking God’s compassion can bring true happiness to our lives.
