Tensions Rise as Ceasefire Negotiations Stall

The outlook for Gaza and the West Bank appears grim as negotiations for a ceasefire stall. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu faces internal pressure and external influences from the U.S. regarding the ongoing conflict.

Tensions Rise as Ceasefire Negotiations Stall

Negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas were supposed to begin three weeks ago, but have not started, creating uncertainty about the future of Gaza, the West Bank, and an independent Palestinian state. The lack of progress in the talks indicates a possible escalation of tensions in a conflict that moves away long-term peace prospects.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his support for any decision made, backed by the White House under Donald Trump. This scenario diminishes the likelihood of the United States imposing its will and effectively getting the residents of Gaza out.

Sandra Kanety Zavaleta, a political science professor, adds that the future does not look promising for Gaza, the West Bank, or the creation of a Palestinian state. Recently, Israel sent tanks to the West Bank for the first time in decades, further complicating the attainment of lasting peace in the region.

Netanyahu has shown his hesitance regarding the ceasefire by not sending a negotiating team to mediating countries and replacing Israeli security leaders with a political ally. Previous talks already revealed Netanyahu's skepticism about a second phase of the ceasefire, highlighting his temporary stance on resolving the conflict.

Since the ceasefire took effect, Israeli attacks have caused the deaths of more than 48,200 people in Gaza, mostly civilians. This context has left a large part of the Palestinian territory in ruins and has generated a significant humanitarian crisis.

Uncertainty regarding the extension of the ceasefire and the possibility of a new conflict remains latent, while the negotiated truce is about to expire without the start of discussions for its continuation.
