The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of Israel, Eli Cohen, announced the cessation of electricity supplies to the Gaza Strip from Israel. This decision was made against the backdrop of escalating tensions along the southern border of the country. Israeli military officials stated that "the course of aerial and rocket attacks on the southern areas of the country" is the reason for taking this step.
"The cessation of electricity supplies to the Gaza sector is a necessary step for the protection of Israeli citizens," said Minister Cohen. According to him, this decision is a "reasonable and necessary response to provocations and aggression coming from the Gaza sector." In turn, Palestinian authorities condemned this decision, calling it "illegal and unjust." They noted that such a step will lead to further deterioration of an already dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza sector.
As of today, the Gaza sector receives the majority of its electricity from Israel, therefore this cessation of supplies will lead to serious problems with essential services. Humanitarian organizations warn of the possibility of a humanitarian catastrophe if the situation does not change in the near future.
