The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced on Friday its consent for the release of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander and the handover of the bodies of four other deceased captives. This was reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Hostage Edan Alexander was captured by Hamas in 2015, and his release has been long negotiated. This decision comes amid indirect prisoner exchange negotiations between Hamas and Israel, mediated by Egypt.
"We have reached an agreement to release the Israeli-American prisoner and the bodies of the martyrs," stated a Hamas spokesperson. The release of Alexander and the bodies of the deceased captives is considered an important step towards improving relations between Hamas and Israel and easing tensions in the region.
