The Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, announced on Sunday that it is working to repatriate the remains of Eli Cohen, who was executed in Syria in 1965 on charges of espionage. The method of his repatriation has not been disclosed, despite repeated assertions about the loss of his burial site. Last month, Israeli reports suggested that it might be possible to recover the remains of Israeli spy Eli Cohen, especially after the discovery this May of 2,500 documents, photographs, and personal belongings belonging to him for the first time. These items had been transferred to Israel by the Mossad.
Eli Cohen was the son of a Syrian family that immigrated to Latin America. He was recruited by the Mossad and went on a mission to Syria under the alias of businessman Kamal Amin Thabet. He succeeded in establishing close ties with senior echelons of the Syrian government.
