A special committee of the UN has issued a report accusing Israel of carrying out in Gaza military methods that could be considered genocide, while using hunger as a weapon and collectively punishing the Palestinian population. This committee, created in 1968 to investigate Israeli practices that violate human rights in the occupied territories, will present its report to the General Assembly on November 18.
The document reveals serious accusations against Israel, stating that the country hinders humanitarian aid, intentionally attacks civilians and humanitarian workers, ignoring calls from the UN and international resolutions. It highlights that Israel is deliberately causing death, hunger, and serious injuries, using hunger as a tactic of war and causing suffering to the Palestinian population.
The report cites concrete examples, such as the public support of members of the Israeli Government for policies aimed at depriving Palestinians of basic needs like water, food, and fuel, in addition to illegally interfering with humanitarian aid. It also mentions the devastation caused by bombings in Gaza, which have severely affected infrastructure and the environment, causing lasting damage for future generations.
Additionally, it criticizes the use of artificial intelligence in bombings, which, along with the lack of distinction between civilians and combatants, endangers the lives of civilians. The report denounces press censorship, repression of dissent, and attacks on journalists, as well as misinformation campaigns aimed at undermining the role of the UN and the international legal order.
Finally, it emphasizes the responsibility of UN member states to ensure compliance with the law and accountability for Israel, warning that impunity could weaken the international legal system and set a dangerous precedent.
