After the approval of the Israeli parliament on a law prohibiting the activities of United Nations agencies in Israel in October, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has given a deadline for UNRWA’s operations in Jerusalem to end by January 30. In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Danon requested that UNRWA cease its activities in Jerusalem and evacuate all the facilities it operates in the city by January 30. According to Danon, in line with the applicable Israeli law, UNRWA must halt its operations in Jerusalem and evacuate all facilities it uses in the city by January 30. Israel accuses the agency of conducting unacceptable activities in Jerusalem, and the required evacuation process is described as simple and uncomplicated. On its part, UNRWA has not yet responded to Israel's request, but the agency states that it continues its work as usual, and provides services to Palestinians in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. It is noted that East Jerusalem, where UNRWA operates, has been recognized by countries as occupied territory by Israel since its occupation in the 1967 war.
