The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Herzi Halevi, announced that they had managed to reach Nasrallah, his successor, and most of the Hezbollah leaders, after the death of Safieddine, head of the Executive Council of Hezbollah, was confirmed. According to the Israeli army, Safieddine died three weeks ago during an Israeli airstrike against Beirut.
The bombing carried out by Israeli fighter jets targeted a building in a southern Beirut suburb, which Israel claimed was Hezbollah's main underground intelligence base. At the time of the attack, around 25 important Hezbollah commanders were in the building, although it has not been confirmed whether they survived.
Safieddine, cousin of the former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, was generally considered his possible successor after Nasrallah's death from an Israeli attack in September. In addition to being the head of the Shura Council, Safieddine was also responsible for decision-making and policy formulation in Hezbollah.
In the words of Herzi Halevi: "We will know how to reach anyone who threatens the security of the citizens of Israel."
